Padouk chair exhibited at 'Tale of Three Cities'
Chinese chair c.1810
Exhibited at `A TALE OF THREE CITIES, CANTON, SHANGHAI & HONG KONG', D.S.Howard, Sotheby's London, 1997, p.182, pl.238.
This rare Chinese hardwood chair appears to have no exact English original, but combines a number of late 18th Century features.
The influences are largely Hepplewhite, with the hoop back having vase-shaped splat with carved roundel in the lower part. The arms are straight and betray a strong Chinese influence and the stretchers are rounded, a feature which is almost exclusively Oriental. Another rare and unusual feature is the carving to the reverse of the splat.
