Satinwood inlaid dressing table by Edwards and Roberts
An attractive satinwood dressing table/desk: inlaid floral decoration with ribbons and swags; standing on tapered legs with brass castors; green leather top and original silvered knobs (one replaced); the drawer is stamped Edwards & Roberts.
The back is not finished in satinwood.
At one point the property of Maureen Swanson, Countess of Dudley, the film and stage actess, who married William Ward, 4th Earl of Dudley.
The firm Edwards and Roberts were among the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the nineteenth century. The company was founded in 1845 and by 1854 was trading as 'Edwards and Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and Importers of Ancient Furniture’. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers and the firm produced high quality furniture, as well as good copies of the 18th and 19th century English and French pieces. Their workmanship included pieces with satinwood marquetry and favoured Georgian designs.
