Georgian Chippendale Cabinet

A fine tall chest or cabinet in the manner of Thomas Chippendale with an unusual and attractive layout of cupboards and drawers which suggests that it could perhaps have been a special order for a Georgian estate. It is made of a rare type of mahogany with areas of dark wavy grain which may be fustic mahogany from the Caribbean or Africa.
The cornice has fine quality applied fretwork, the doors are counter-veneered in figured mahogany and with well-made locks and hinges; the old rococo gilt brass handles are not original but appear to have been with the cabinet for some considerable time. The top drawer has old baize inside and there are large wooden castors underneath the cabinet to make pulling it out easier. The dove-tailed drawers have oak linings and the backboards are also in oak.
The cornice is 48” 122cm wide and 25” 63.5cm deep.
