Pair of George III side tables
An attractive pair of George III side tables with red faux-marble tops, finely carved and fluted lime washed legs, the friezes veneered in mahogany.
This design of leg and breakfronted side tables with bowed sides were made by cabinet makers in the late 18th century: see Linsay Boynton Gillow furnure designs plates 86 and 90 and Clifford Musgrave plates 132, 134 & 137.
These tables are thought to have from a house in Ireland. When we bought them, they had been dipped in a caustic tank some years earlier; the legs had small remains of of white paint but we liked the old pine, lime wash colour they had aquired. The tops had a later coat of cream coloured paint; underneath there were the remains of a red coat and hence we choose a red faux marble to finish the tops.
