An attractive Gothic Revival oak breakfront bookcase. Good original colour and condition ~ the upper section with old opaque and clear glass set into well carved gothic arched glazing bars; the same gothic design used on the applied carving to the lower doors and drawers.

In 1835, oak gothic revival furniture was very fashionable with the influence of Augustus Pugin, the brilliant 23-year-old designer, who favoured oak for gothic revival furniture in the Palace of Westminster.

My parents bought this bookcase in the 1980s but for the last 25 years we have used it for our reference books in a tall vaulted room, with 3 gothic chandeliers and a large gothic window at the end of the room - it looks splendid. Now it is for sale, we have cleaned it inside and out including the glass, waxed the timber and made keys for the doors. It dismantles into 6 main sections + the cornice, the centre shelf at waist level and the plinth.
